No-worry travel with HAK
As the largest national association of drivers and motor vehicle owners, HAK has an inextricable link with tourism and travel
We are talking to Ivo Bikić, president of the Croatian Automobile Club, about mobility, motoring and tourism – topics that are always pertinent and interesting.
Could you, please, start by introducing the Croatian Automobile Club?
HAK is the largest national association of drivers and motor vehicle owners, with over 230,000 members and 59 associated motoring clubs, which aims to promote mobility, further and protect its members’ interests, and continuously look after the safety of all road users in the Republic of Croatia, especially those who are most vulnerable and at risk.
Next year, HAK will celebrate its 120th birthday. It was established in Zagreb on 1 June 1906 on the initiative of 14 car owners – mobility enthusiasts and lovers of new inventions and ideas. In addition to being inclusive, they also organised trips for their members (i.e. engaged in tourism activities), held races and fostered links with international motoring clubs.
HAK’s development gained momentum in the 1960s due to tourism boom, road construction and the increase in the number of cars, when it started providing a roadside assistance service, which, apart from helping drivers in distress, also provided road traffic information.
In addition, the Croatian Automobile Club is a member of various international organisations, among which perhaps the best-known is FIA, International Automobile Federation, which consists of 245 national motoring clubs from 149 countries, actively engaged in mobility and motorsport and representing a total of 80 million members.
HAK’s activities and the services it offers are closely connected to tourism.
Since its inception, HAK has been inextricably linked with tourism and travel. Our membership and roadside assistance services have evolved by paying close attention to trends in tourism. In addition, we offer high-quality multilingual information on road conditions and provide key traffic data using various channels: from radio stations, our mobile app and webpages to the printed membership magazine and the online HAK Revija magazine.
